Thinking and designing in different dimensions is challenging. At first glance, size correlates with the physical scope of an object; however this description can be extended by terms such as high, low, compact, dense, manageable, modest, powerful, significant, negligible, secret, loud, quiet and so on. Yet, these characterizations only manifest themselves through a direct comparison, a contrast that emphasizes opposites. This division into two poles, in turn, forms a unity. During the 3-week module "Layout Advanced" our focus was on the concept of "SCALE", meaning to scale an element within a layout system. The starting point was a selection of various art books chosen by the students, who then enhanced them with text and image sources. The final product should be presented in two extremely different formats – large and small. Through this comprehensive redesign of existing content, the students examined how the format influences the content and the narrative, how texts from various sources can be weighted and meaningfully organized within a layout, and how expressiveness and emphasis shift due to different size ratios.
